Hong Kong Art Prize announced the winners and people’s prize on May 16th 2013. The Hong Kong Art prize has been developed to cultivate and recognize the depth of talent in Hong Kong. It is presented by Asia Contemporary Art Show, organized in conjunction with the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association, venue sponsor Wheelock Properties and prize sponsor Art-Lease. With the fast growing interest in art and art investments in the Asia region, it is important to see a wider platform to encourage and promote locally based talents. Winners were chosen from 20 finalists out of over 150 applicants by a panel of esteemed judges. It was great to see a very wide variety of medium of art work submitted. This year’s winner is Jims Chi Hang Lam with his ink and acrylic on wood piece Beacon Sheung Wan Hours. The popular vote by the audience goes to Peter Ross’ Where is Your Heart? It depicts the traditional style chinese tong lau in the older and busy parts of Hong Kong and uses ink pen, tea, and soy. For the first time Art Basel is coming to Hong Kong, showcasing artistic spectacles of both established and emerging talents. Already successful in Basel and Miami Beach, this new addition to the Hong Kong art scene hopes to bring extensive opportunities for discovery and creation for artists, curators, collectors and visitors. The show will trace 12 decades of art history across four sectors. The Galleries section will present 20th and 21st century pieces from over 170 contemporary galleries, including paintings, sculptures and installations. In Insights you’ll find projects developed specifically for the Hong Kong show, exclusively by Asia and Asia-Pacific artists. Discoveries aims to give a global platform to emerging artists from all over the world, and Encounters is dedicated to large scale sculptures and installations, transcending the traditional art fair stands. In its 21st season, this year’s Le French May promises to offer something for everyone as it brings over 500 events to Hong Kong and Macau. Running from the 17 April to 23 June, there’s still time to check the program and head along to one of the many spectacles taking place. The three key themes; Le French May – for the art hipsters, Le GourMay – for the foodies and Le FashionMay – for the fashionistas, encompass a kaleidoscope of offerings, from opera and cinema, to wine tasting and cabaret. The selection of music events on offer is extensive with numerous classical performers, such as Eric Le Sage as well as more contemporary performers, including electro-pop artist Chat and powerful percussionists Les Tambours du Bronx. On 23 June Stanley Plaza will host Fete de la Musique, a free of charge music concert featuring local and international performers. Simon Birch’s “Hooligan” exhibition at Ben Brown Fine Arts will come to a close on May 15th but not without selling out most of his paintings as well as adding to the exhibition on May 11th his sketch drawings for the first time. His images are striking, style distinct, and trademark-able and in all of it he tells a story. In this case, there is someone off canvas affecting the portraits of these faceless people alluded to only in the title. What is a Hooligan? When I think of the word without looking it up in the dictionary, I think of the meaning as someone who causes trouble. And Hooligan’s are generally nondescript just as the portraits could really represent any one of us. Are there people in your life causing you trouble? I recently went on a trip to Las Vegas. In addition to doing all the standard Vegas fun activities, I had some quiet moments to visit a few galleries on Gallery Row at Aria Resort & Casino. I saw some amazing art work by American master sculptor Richard MacDonald. There were art pieces from the series he did while behind-the-scenes to Cirque du Soleil, pieces for the Royal Ballet School, and many other art work. Each piece has such incredible detail, expression, and emotion. There were videos at the gallery to show Richard’s approach and working process and it’s amazing how quickly he moves while sculpting. He observes the live model and their performance and immediately shapes and sculpts the art piece. It’s incredible how much detail he can remember in such a short period of time and have all that translated to a sculpture. Most of the pieces are placed on a rotatable display plate so one can feel free to rotate the piece around and really observe various angles. I recently dropped in to the K11 Art Mall in Tsim Sha Tsui East to check out the latest exhibition in this unusual mall come gallery space. The Fascination / Imagination exhibition combines the works of emerging Chinese creatives, including artists, designers, dancers and cinematographers. Originally presented at Paris Fashion Week, the exhibition has now moved to Hong Kong, hoping to ‘inspire curiosity, unleash dreams, strike new thoughts and out-of-the-world imaginations.’ The exhibition itself is compact, split into two corners of the K11 mall, the first level being particularly challenging to find, venturing through a clothes store before reaching the artworks. I enjoyed taking a look at the few pieces I saw, particularly the Charles Guo photography, merging art, fashion, photography and technology, it’s no surprise he is highly sought after for his editorial style and voted one of China’s top ten photographers. Over the past 10 years, Daniel Yeung has rapidly established himself as one of the leading contemporary dance artists in Hong Kong. His view on dance and it’s relation to art is truly unique, which he displays through his innovate, thought-provoking compositions. ‘Contemporary dance is not a fixed style or technique. It’s the phenomenon, the here and now, whatever we have.’ Daniel’s journey into the dance field has been anything but conventional. After leaving school, he majored in fine arts and music, before going on to work in various local art institutions. When he failed to find his true calling in this area, he went on to volunteer at a local contemporary dance studio. Progressing from administration assistant to marketing manager, it was here his interest in dance artistry began to grow. ‘I just loved the energy’, and after joining the company initially for fun, Daniel soon began to realise his natural aptitude for movement. ‘I felt dance was something that was in my blood.
