Asia Contemporary Art Show

If you’re looking for an alternative to the traditional art fair, head along to the Asia Contemporary Art Show at the JW Marriott Hotel, Hong Kong. Following the same format as the Asia Hotel Art Fair held previously in the year, the JW Marriott will open four floors of its guest rooms, adorning them with paintings, sculptures and photography. Works on display are by emerging and well established artists and advertised as accessibly priced. There’s also a public lounge and complimentary refreshments on each of the floors to keep your creative mind on track. Featuring over 75 galleries from 16 countries, with 2,000 works from over 300 artists, we suggest you set aside a good few hours to browse the extensive displays. Check out local Hong Kong galleries, including AO Vertical Art Space and Galerie Koo, as well as diverse offerings from the U.S.A. Canada and Australia. Art Basel in Hong Kong

For the first time Art Basel is coming to Hong Kong, showcasing artistic spectacles of both established and emerging talents. Already successful in Basel and Miami Beach, this new addition to the Hong Kong art scene hopes to bring extensive opportunities for discovery and creation for artists, curators, collectors and visitors. The show will trace 12 decades of art history across four sectors. The Galleries section will present 20th and 21st century pieces from over 170 contemporary galleries, including paintings, sculptures and installations. In Insights you’ll find projects developed specifically for the Hong Kong show, exclusively by Asia and Asia-Pacific artists. Discoveries aims to give a global platform to emerging artists from all over the world, and Encounters is dedicated to large scale sculptures and installations, transcending the traditional art fair stands. Say Bonjour to Le French May

In its 21st season, this year’s Le French May promises to offer something for everyone as it brings over 500 events to Hong Kong and Macau. Running from the 17 April to 23 June, there’s still time to check the program and head along to one of the many spectacles taking place. The three key themes; Le French May – for the art hipsters, Le GourMay – for the foodies and Le FashionMay – for the fashionistas, encompass a kaleidoscope of offerings, from opera and cinema, to wine tasting and cabaret. The selection of music events on offer is extensive with numerous classical performers, such as Eric Le Sage as well as more contemporary performers, including electro-pop artist Chat and powerful percussionists Les Tambours du Bronx. On 23 June Stanley Plaza will host Fete de la Musique, a free of charge music concert featuring local and international performers. The cross cultural projects look particularly interesting, including Yo Gee Ti, a French-Taiwanese Choreographic piece and Antalis HK – Fete en Papier, showing local artists and designers crossing over with French culture. Fascination / Imagination – A fashion and art exhibition

I recently dropped in to the K11 Art Mall in Tsim Sha Tsui East to check out the latest exhibition in this unusual mall come gallery space. The Fascination / Imagination exhibition combines the works of emerging Chinese creatives, including artists, designers, dancers and cinematographers. Originally presented at Paris Fashion Week, the exhibition has now moved to Hong Kong, hoping to ‘inspire curiosity, unleash dreams, strike new thoughts and out-of-the-world imaginations.’ The exhibition itself is compact, split into two corners of the K11 mall, the first level being particularly challenging to find, venturing through a clothes store before reaching the artworks. I enjoyed taking a look at the few pieces I saw, particularly the Charles Guo photography, merging art, fashion, photography and technology, it’s no surprise he is highly sought after for his editorial style and voted one of China’s top ten photographers. Daniel Yeung Interview

Over the past 10 years, Daniel Yeung has rapidly established himself as one of the leading contemporary dance artists in Hong Kong. His view on dance and it’s relation to art is truly unique, which he displays through his innovate, thought-provoking compositions. ‘Contemporary dance is not a fixed style or technique. It’s the phenomenon, the here and now, whatever we have.’ Daniel’s journey into the dance field has been anything but conventional. After leaving school, he majored in fine arts and music, before going on to work in various local art institutions. When he failed to find his true calling in this area, he went on to volunteer at a local contemporary dance studio. Progressing from administration assistant to marketing manager, it was here his interest in dance artistry began to grow. ‘I just loved the energy’, and after joining the company initially for fun, Daniel soon began to realise his natural aptitude for movement. ‘I felt dance was something that was in my blood. Maybe my visual arts background led me to see myself as a piece of art, a sculpture perhaps, and therefore more capable to understand my body and how it moves.’ Aged 29, Daniel made the […]

Momix Bothanica

As part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival, RAW was invited to view the American dance company Momix’s latest creation, Bothanica. Claire Johnson reviewed the show.Bothanica promises ‘a visual evocation of the four seasons’, with dancers recreating vibrant images of nature against a sparse backdrop. Creative Director, Moses Pendleton is one of America’s most widely performed choreographers and directors, creating ‘dancer-illusionists’ through light, shadow, props and the human body. The show was opened by a large piece of white material billowing across the stage floor, suddenly transformed by lights into a fast flowing river with emerging bodies. This really does set the tone for Pendleton’s show, visually effective yet sometimes a little baffling. The first act really capitalized on its extravagant props and effects, and at times it felt as though these were the real stars of the show. There were some choreographic highlights, namely a stunning solo piece set on a sloping mirrored platform and ‘Primavera’, displaying fluid, elegant partner work. Our take on the Affordable Art Fair

Last week, our blogger Claire attended the preview event for the Affordable Art Fair at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Here’s what she thought of the evening. From young fashionistas to seasoned art-investors, there was a definite buzz in the exhibition space, divided into numerous mini galleries centered round the glowing Peroni bar. While the drinks were not free, there was still a healthy crowd mingling over ice-cold Peronis and the odd bottle of champagne. With 84 galleries on display, the compact layout made it easy to see everything on offer, although at times it did feel like you were trapped in a mind-boggling art maze, not sure if you’d already been this way or that. All part of the fun I think! Galleria Nicolas presented solely Filipino artists, including some endearing figure paintings featuring miniscule, lengthened necks. All of the paintings in this gallery’s collection showed a lovely sense of character and personality set against bold colors and backdrops. The UK gallery Bleach Box showcased a selection of modern photography on both small and large scales, including some very affordable limited edition prints. Asia Hotel Art Fair 2013

At the end of February we attended this year’s Asia Hotel Art Fair at the Mandarin Oriental. This unique event saw the luxury hotel open three floors of its guest rooms and suites to the public, transforming them into exhibition spaces for international artists. We really enjoyed this unique opportunity to view the pieces in the hotel surroundings, as well as chatting to artists and curators. There were also a number of special exhibitions, including ‘Master’s Sight’, featuring popular Korean artists and ‘Being in the Moment’, introducing new and upcoming art talents. By Claire Johnson

Affordable Art Fair

This week the first Affordable Art Fair in Hong Kong will open its doors at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Running from 15 – 17 March, this three day event will host an array of contemporary art at affordable prices. The event aims to create an inspiring, friendly atmosphere showcasing thousands of paintings, prints, sculptures and photography. Everything is priced between HKD $1,000 – HKD $100,000, with 75% of the pieces priced below HKD $75,000. There’ll be a selection of both emerging and well established artists, all pieces will be clearly labelled helping you to find the perfect artwork to meet your budget. Meeting David Smith By Claire Johnson At the beginning of the month, RAW attended the opening of the ‘My Space’ exhibition at the Amelia Johnson Contemporary Gallery. Running until 1 March, the exhibition features two local artists, Wong Kai Kin and David Smith. RAW was lucky enough to catch up with David and learn more about his works. Your pieces are predominantly landscape paintings. Why do you use this subject? ‘I have always been inspired by the environment I find myself in. Growing up on the west coast of Ireland, you can’t help but absorb the qualities of light, space and Atlantic air. Coming to compressed Hong Kong was quite a contrast, and this experience seems to have heightened my feeling for space and environment. Light, weather, pollution and distance are things I am always aware of.’ You have photography projects relating to your paintings, are these the starting point for each painting?  ‘Sometimes. I work on a number of projects including photography and music, which tend to weave their way into my painting.
